History
In 1936 the area where the Sangster International Airport sits was first identified as the perfect location for the first airport to serve the Montego Bay area. Construction of the first runway began in 1940 and the airport was completed in 1947. It began operation as Montego Bay Airport and it was later renamed Sangster International Airport after Sir Donald Sangster, former Prime Minister of Jamaica.
The Jamaican government took over control of the airport in 1947 and began making systematic improvements over the years. The airport’s current state is a remarkable departure from its humble beginnings. This is due in large part to the agreement that the government signed with MBJ Limited in 2003. The 30-year agreement to take over the responsibility for operations and development of the airport and all of the property surrounding it.
